How it works
1Add a DRM-free EPUB file from your device.
2Pick a chapter, or start from the sentence you're on.
3Make the MP3 in your browser and save it.
One chapter, one MP3
Ebooks are made of chapters, and DocuVocal keeps them. When a book has two or more chapters, the Download dialog lets you choose one under "What to save": the MP3 starts at the chapter heading and ends where the next chapter begins. A chapter longer than 20 minutes gives you its first 20 minutes. You can also start from any sentence you tap. Each file is named after the book and the chapter, so your downloads stay in order in your audio app.
The natural voice, made on your device
The MP3 is read by the DocuVocal natural voice at normal speed, and your browser makes it on your own computer or phone. How long that takes depends on the device: with fast graphics support, a 20-minute chapter takes about 8 minutes to make; without it, closer to 45. The dialog shows an estimate first. The voice downloads once (about 92 to 330 MB) and starts quickly after that.
Which books work
DRM-free EPUB files work: public-domain classics from libraries such as Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks, books from DRM-free stores, and your own manuscripts. The free reader opens about the first 125,000 characters of a book, so the chapters you can save come from that part.
Full audiobooks with the Library
For the whole book in one go, the DocuVocal Library is coming soon. It will make an audiobook you keep: an M4B with chapter markers for audiobook apps, an MP3 for every chapter, or a private podcast feed, with your place kept across devices.
Questions
Can I convert an EPUB to MP3 for free?
Yes. Each download is an MP3 of up to 20 minutes, with no account and no trial. Open the book, choose what to save and press Make MP3.
Can I save one chapter at a time?
Yes, when the book has two or more chapters. Choose the chapter under "What to save" in the Download dialog. If it is longer than 20 minutes, the MP3 has its first 20 minutes.
Will the MP3 work in my audiobook app?
Most audiobook and podcast apps can import MP3 files, and every music player can play them. The free MP3 has no chapter markers inside it; for a whole audiobook with chapters, the M4B files from the upcoming DocuVocal Library are the better fit.
Can I convert Kindle books to MP3?
Only DRM-free ones. Books bought in the Kindle store are usually locked with DRM, and no third-party tool, including DocuVocal, can open them. If you have a DRM-free MOBI or AZW3 file, convert it to EPUB with a free tool such as Calibre first.
Why does making the MP3 take a few minutes?
Your browser makes every sentence with the natural voice on your own device, one after another. Fast graphics support makes that quicker than real time; without it, making the audio takes longer than listening to it. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
