Turn your script into a voice-over
Paste your script and get a voice-over for your video, explainer or slides. Choose one of 7 natural voices, set the pauses, and save it as MP3 or WAV.
Free up to 50 pages. No signup.
How it works
1Paste your script. Leave a blank line or type [pause 2s] where the voice should wait.
2The Download dialog opens: pick a voice, a speed, and MP3 or WAV. Press Not now to listen first.
3Make the voice-over, save it, and drop the file into your video editor.
A voice-over from your script, free
Video makers, teachers and presenters need narration more often than they need a studio. Paste the script, and DocuVocal reads it with its natural voice and saves the result as an audio file you can place on your timeline. The file starts at the top of your script and runs for up to 20 minutes, enough for most explainers, tutorials and product demos. It is free, with no signup.
Pauses for timing
Narration needs room to breathe. A blank line between paragraphs gives a short pause. For an exact one, type a pause tag: [pause] waits one second, and [pause 2s], [pause 1.5s] or [pause 500ms] wait as long as you say, up to 10 seconds. Tags can sit between sentences or inside one, in capitals or not, and they are never read out. Playback on the page waits in the same places, so you can check the timing against your video before you make the file.
An example script to try
Paste this short script: "Meet the trail camera that sees in the dark. [pause 1s] It runs for six months on a single charge. [pause 2s] Set it up in a minute, and let the forest do the rest." Press Listen, and the voice waits one second after the first sentence and two seconds after the second, so the footage has time to change. Put a blank line before each new scene, and the voice pauses there too.
WAV for your editor, MP3 for sharing
Choose WAV when the voice-over goes into a video or audio editor: it is uncompressed 16-bit mono audio, about 2.9 MB a minute, so nothing is lost before your project is exported. Choose MP3, about half a megabyte a minute, to send a draft for review or to listen on your phone. Pick from 7 voices with American and British accents, each with a short sample to play first, and set the speed from 0.75× to 1.5×.
Made on your device, so the time varies
The natural voice makes the voice-over on your own computer or phone, so how long it takes depends on your device. A 3-minute voice-over takes about 2 minutes with fast graphics support (WebGPU) and about 7 minutes without it, and the Download dialog shows an estimate before you start. The first time, the voice downloads once (about 92 to 330 MB). Keep the tab open until the file is ready.
Questions
Is the voice-over generator free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no card. Each voice-over can be up to 20 minutes long.
Should I export my voice-over as MP3 or WAV?
WAV if it goes into a video or audio editor, because it is uncompressed. MP3 if you want a small file to share or play on a phone. Either way, each file holds up to 20 minutes of speech.
How do I add a pause to a voice-over?
Leave a blank line between paragraphs for a short pause, or type a tag where the voice should wait: [pause] is one second, and [pause 2s], [pause 1.5s] or [pause 500ms] set the exact length, up to 10 seconds. The tag is not spoken, and the pause is in the file as well as in playback.
Can I hear the voices before I choose one?
Yes. Each voice in the Download dialog has a play button with a short sample, so you can compare them without downloading the natural voice. The voice you pick is remembered for your next voice-over.
Does the voice-over start at the beginning of my script?
Yes. From this page the download starts at the top, even if you tapped a sentence further down while listening. To redo only the end, tap the sentence to start from and choose "From the sentence you're on" under "What to save".
Which accents and languages are available?
English only, for now, with 5 American and 2 British voices, women's and men's. Your browser's own voices may speak other languages on the page, but voice-over files are made with the natural voice.
Can I narrate something longer, like an audiobook?
Each file is up to 20 minutes, so split a long narration into parts and make one file per part. For whole books, the DocuVocal Library, coming soon, makes audiobooks you keep, with chapters, as M4B, MP3 or a private podcast feed.
