How it works

  1. 1Choose your PDF or drop it here.

  3. 3Press Make MP3, keep the tab open, then save the file.

Up to 20 minutes per MP3, free

Each download is an MP3 of up to 20 minutes of speech, read by the DocuVocal natural voice at normal speed. It starts at the sentence you're on, so you decide where it begins. When the PDF has chapter headings, you can pick a chapter instead; a chapter longer than 20 minutes gives you its first 20 minutes. The file is named after the document and plays in any music, podcast or audiobook app that opens audio files.

Made in your browser, so the time depends on your device

The natural voice runs on your own computer or phone and makes the audio there, sentence by sentence. On a computer with fast graphics support, a full 20-minute MP3 takes about 8 minutes. Without it, making the audio takes longer than listening to it: up to about 45 minutes. Before you start, the Download dialog shows an estimate for the device you are using. The first time, the voice itself downloads once (about 92 to 330 MB). Keep the tab open while it works; you can cancel at any time.

Clean audio, without the page clutter

The MP3 is made from the same cleaned text you see on the Listen page. Running headers, footers and page numbers are removed, words split by a hyphen at the end of a line are joined again, and sentences carry on across page breaks. Reference lists at the end of papers are left out, so a paper ends where its text ends, and headings stay in, so you hear where each section starts.

Whole books are coming with the Library

The free MP3 covers a chapter or a stretch of up to 20 minutes. For a whole book, the DocuVocal Library, coming soon, will make an audiobook you keep: an M4B file with chapter markers, an MP3 for each chapter, or a private podcast feed.

Questions

Is the PDF to MP3 converter free?

Yes. Each MP3 is up to 20 minutes long, with no account and no trial. The free reader opens PDFs of up to 50 pages; longer files are read up to page 50, and you will see a notice.

How long does it take to make the MP3?

It depends on your device, because the voice runs on it. With fast graphics support (WebGPU), a 20-minute MP3 takes about 8 minutes; without it, it can take about 45 minutes. The Download dialog shows an estimate before you start.

Which part of my PDF goes into the MP3?

By default it starts at the sentence you're on and runs for up to 20 minutes, or to the end of the document. If the PDF has two or more chapters, choose one under "What to save" and the MP3 covers that chapter, or its first 20 minutes if it is longer.

Can I convert a whole PDF book into an audiobook?

That is what the DocuVocal Library is for. It is coming soon and will turn a whole book into an audiobook you keep, with chapters: an M4B file, an MP3 per chapter, or a private podcast feed.

Will the MP3 play on my phone?

Yes. It is a standard MP3 of spoken audio, about half a megabyte per minute, so it plays in the music, files or podcast app on almost any phone and in most cars. The voice is always at normal speed; most players can speed it up.

Can I make an MP3 from a scanned PDF?

Yes. If a PDF has no selectable text, DocuVocal offers to read it with text recognition first. That takes a few seconds per page; when it finishes, the Download dialog opens and you make the MP3 as usual.
