Text to MP3, free and without signing up
Paste an article, a lesson, a story or your own notes, and DocuVocal turns the text into an audio file read by its natural voice. Each file holds up to 20 minutes of speech, which is about 18,000 characters at normal speed. The file starts at the top of your text. If the text runs longer, tap the sentence where the next file should begin and choose "From the sentence you're on" in the Download dialog. There is no account, no trial and no card.
Pick the voice, the speed and the format
Choose from 7 voices: Heart (US), Bella (US), Nicole (US), Michael (US), Fenrir (US), Emma (UK), George (UK). Each one has a short sample you can play first, without downloading the voice. Set the speed of the file from 0.75× to 1.5×. MP3 is the small file, about half a megabyte a minute, and plays on any phone, computer or car stereo. WAV is uncompressed, about 2.9 MB a minute, and is the better choice for audio and video editing. Your choices are remembered in this browser for next time.
Pauses where you want them
A blank line between paragraphs adds a short pause. For an exact one, type a tag such as [pause 2s]: [pause] on its own waits one second, and [pause 1.5s] or [pause 500ms] set the length, up to 10 seconds. The tag is never read out. Playback on the page pauses in the same places, so what you hear while checking the text is what ends up in the file.
Made on your device, one sentence at a time
DocuVocal makes the audio with its natural voice on the computer or phone you are using, one sentence after another, so the time it takes depends on the device. With fast graphics support (WebGPU), 20 minutes of speech take about 8 minutes to make; without it, closer to 45. Shorter texts are quicker. The Download dialog shows an estimate before you start, the voice itself downloads only the first time (about 92 to 330 MB), and you can cancel whenever you like.
Questions
Is the text to MP3 converter free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no card. Each file is up to 20 minutes long, and you can save it as MP3 or WAV.
How much text fits in one file?
About 18,000 characters, roughly 3,000 words, at normal speed. A slower speed and longer pauses make the audio longer, so less text fits. If your text is longer than one file, the file has its first 20 minutes, and you can make the next one from the sentence where it stopped.
Can I save it as WAV instead of MP3?
Yes. Choose WAV under Format in the Download dialog. A WAV file is uncompressed 16-bit mono audio, about 2.9 MB a minute, which editing apps handle without losing quality. MP3 is about half a megabyte a minute and is easier to share or keep on a phone.
Which voices can I choose from?
7 English voices: Heart (US), Bella (US), Nicole (US), Michael (US), Fenrir (US), Emma (UK), George (UK). You can play a short sample of each in the Download dialog before the natural voice downloads. On the page, your browser's own voices can also read the text aloud, but files are always made with the natural voice.
Can I turn a long document into an audiobook?
Each file covers up to 20 minutes, which suits articles, chapters and lessons. For whole books, the DocuVocal Library, coming soon, makes audiobooks you keep: an M4B with chapters, an MP3 per chapter, or a private podcast feed. If your text comes from a PDF, EPUB or Word file, open the file itself instead of pasting it, and page numbers and headers are cleaned up for you.
